the brands of 2023

In 2023, Material Matters will showcase a curated mix of exhibitors to celebrate the importance of materials and their ability to shape our lives. The selection included global brands, makers, designers, manufacturers, and artists working in materials that ranged from recycled aluminium, clay, wood and glass to orange peel, roots and sugar.

re-FRAME, from Julian Leedham, is both a process and a reflection. The old adage ‘tidy house tidy mind’ introduces an observation that the world around us influences our mental landscapes, yet how far does this observation go? Does living and working in boxes inhibit ‘out-side the box’ thinking? Does an organised city lead to an organised mind? Does disconnecting ourselves from nature interrupt our natural thought processes?

Pursuing a freedom of form that translates through its visual language combined with tones gathered from the natural world re-FRAME seeks to interject a natural aesthetic to an interior space, creating moments that disrupt everyday thoughts and promote positive mental wellness.

Combining the use of aluminium and paper with sculptural processes, reclaimed mirrors are re-FRAMED giving them a second lease of life. Readily available materials also allow the mirrors to be easily repaired or once again re-FRAMED.

As an adaptable process re-FRAME can take various guises from unadorned wall mounted mirrors to simple freestanding designs that can either lean gently in situ or stand proudly in place, all are unique.
