Championing American hardwoods around the world

An international creative collaborator and leading material resource, AHEC (American Hardwood Export Council) champions the performance, sustainability and aesthetic potential of U.S. hardwoods across global markets. Representing a broad network of producers – from small sawmills to major manufacturers – the organisation brings a unified voice to the industry, promoting over 20 commercially available species.

At Material Matters Copenhagen, AHEC presents Wood for the Trees, an immersive exhibition developed with Mitre & Mondays and Benchmark. Transforming the space into an abstract woodland, the installation traces the journey of hardwood from forest to finished product through five stages: Growth, Planning, Selection, Resilience and Timber. Combining tactile installations with audio-visual storytelling, the project invites visitors to engage directly with the material, revealing both its environmental context and design potential. The exhibition offers a thoughtful reflection on responsible forestry, long-term sustainability and the enduring value of wood.
