Circular craft with reclaimed banknotes
Surface Matter help designers and architects use materials to their full potential, because ‘Change shouldn’t mean waste’. Surface Matter exist to keep quality materials in circulation and give people opportunities to make better design choices. They want to live in a world where single-use is singled-out, and where they can equip everyone to make materials more useful, with every use.
In a striking collaboration, the Bank of England, Plasticiet and Surface Matter unveil a new exhibition for London Design Festival: a sculptural installation made fom reclaimed, recycled and reconstructed British banknotes. Once a symbol of economic permanence, as banknotes are removed from circulation they are shredded, reconstituted and reinvented into architectural, functional and symbolic forms. Inspired by nature and aspiring to co-create a post-waste world, the installation examines how value can be transformed through design.
