Designing for Nature
As cities continue to grow, wildlife is increasingly pushed to the margins. London-based Phyta Biodesign is exploring a different future, creating architectural systems that enable people and nature to thrive together. Combining computational design, advanced digital fabrication and material innovation, the studio develops bio-integrated building components that transform conventional surfaces into habitats for birds, bees and other species. It's an approach that reimagines architecture not as something separate from nature, but as an active contributor to healthier urban ecosystems.
At Material Matters London, Phyta Biodesign will present Fauna, a computationally designed ceramic façade system that incorporates habitats for birds, bats and pollinators, alongside Apia, a modular mycelium composite panel created to support solitary bees. Together, the two systems demonstrate how bio-integrated materials and thoughtful design can help restore biodiversity while enhancing the performance of the built environment.
