Turning obsolete television glass into sculptural lighting

Rombachs is the Antwerp-based practice of glass artist, designer and cultural entrepreneur Frederik Rombach, who combines architectural engineering with traditional glassmaking to transform waste materials into collectible lighting and sculpture. At Material Matters London, Rombach is collaborating with British glass artist and engineer Gregory Alliss, whose practice explores the creative potential of complex and contaminated waste glass.

Together they will present ‘Rebroadcast’, a collection made from obsolete Cathode Ray Tube (CRT) television screens. Combining glassblowing, casting and cold-working techniques, the project transforms this challenging electronic waste into sculptural lighting, including wall pieces, pendants and table lamps. The work also asks what happens to the value of a waste material when the resource itself becomes finite.
