Giving Waste a Second Life
Founded by Callie Tedder-Hares and Emma Lally, Brighton-based Spared® is a multidisciplinary studio working at the intersection of craft, material innovation and circular design. Since launching in 2021, the women-led studio has partnered with brands, architects and cultural institutions to transform waste — from oyster shells and coffee grounds to masonry waste and bottle tops — into bespoke furniture, interiors and objects. Their approach is rooted in the belief that discarded materials can become things of beauty, meaning and lasting value.
For Material Matters London 2026, Spared will present Second Song, a new collection created from the overlooked waste generated within its own design practice. Material samples, colour trials, prototypes, offcuts and experimental composites are transformed into unique, individually numbered collectible objects, each preserving something of the creative process that produced it. Rather than suggesting that circular design can eliminate waste entirely, Second Song asks us to look more closely at what remains — and find new value in it.
