Taking place from 10–12 June at the extraordinary Gammel Dok building in the Christianshavn district in Copenhagen, this year’s programme spans bio-based materials, recycled waste streams, handcrafted processes and material research — from mycelium lighting and bacterial cellulose to rice husks, reclaimed glass and Nordic wood fibre.
Among the returning exhibitors is the American Hardwood Export Council, presenting Wood for the Trees, an immersive installation tracing the journey of hardwood timber from forest to finished product through tactile and audio-visual storytelling.
Dutch furniture brand Aifunghi continues its exploration of mycelium-based composite materials with new furniture and lighting pieces, while Swedish maker Jo Andersson Studios launches Drippy, a sculptural lighting collection combining hand-blown glass with solid wood.
Several exhibitors will present projects focused on waste transformation and regenerative material systems. Spanish company BIRDMIND converts rice-husk waste into architectural and interior materials, including surfaces incorporating discarded mussel shells. Meanwhile, Malai Biomaterials creates bacterial cellulose materials grown on coconut-processing waste, developed in collaboration with local craft communities in India.
Elsewhere, Finnish acoustic materials brand Aisti, presented by Beyond Rational, will showcase ceiling tiles made from renewable Nordic wood fibre using foam-forming technology designed to reduce material usage and carbon impact in interiors and construction.
Material experimentation continues across furniture, interiors and product design. Crafting Plastics! x LoopLoop explore plant-based colouring systems and biomaterials, while Danish practice Bundle Studio investigates bio-based adhesives through furniture prototypes made using lignin-based binders.
Other participants include Kast, presenting sculptural concrete basins in new colourways, and CHICHOIMAO, whose handcrafted wooden furniture combines traditional joinery techniques with contemporary living.
Ukraine House in Denmark will present Form In The Making, a showcase of Ukrainian manufacturers curated by Anait Danielian and Larysa Tsybina exploring the relationship between industry, craft and functional art.
‘This year we have drawn together makers, manufacturers and researchers from Hong Kong to Slovakia, from the UK to Ukraine, all united by a fascination with what materials can do — and what they should no longer be asked to do,’ say Material Matters co-founders Grant Gibson and William Knight.
